Giving a voice to the Kent bird club
Section winners of the Alberta rosettes
The club held its 2018 annual show on Saturday 11 November 2018 at its monthly-meeting venue of St Marks Church Hall in Gravesend.
Our two judges, John Gray (canaries and British) and Charlie Nelson (foreign birds) did a great job and then stayed on for a spot of lunch before the doors opened to the public at 2:00pm.
The weather was rather drab but it great to see a lot of old faces and a good number of the public coming into the show hall. For the the first time this year, we included a number of information sheets for those less familiar with bird shows to indicate the type of bird as well as general information. This seemed to be successful and is likely to be continued for future years. The show secretary, Richard Hammond, arrived at the start of the day with the show manager, Kerry Heaver, and other early birds to erect the staging and a good number stayed behind after the end to take everything down, put the staging back, and help with a general clean-up in the hall.
Members came together to help with stewarding and a particular mention to Fergus McCarthy for his work on the tomobola which, along with the raffle for the bird seed and refreshments helped to more than cover costs on the day.
156 birds were benched – a continued increase for the past two years – and a notable increase in the foreign bird section. The club was also pleased that four juniors benched birds this year. Please see below for the full list of winners.
